Event Details
KEI is pleased to host a discussion focused on international trade policy and the future for economic cooperation between South Korea and the U.S. The two speakers, Michael Beeman, visiting scholar at Stanford University and former Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Japan, Korea, and APEC and Han-koo Yeo, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and former trade minister of the Republic of Korea will share their unique perspectives from both sides of the economic cooperation and trade relations between the two nations.
The discussion will take place against the backdrop of the U.S. presidential election with insights from Beeman’s recent book release Walking Out. The first portion will introduce the book which applies the lens of international political economy to explain the shift in U.S. trade policy, characterized by zero-sum views and a deep domestic political divide, and outline expectations for the future of economic cooperation. The second portion of the discussion will focus on the speakers’ experiences from both sides of the 2017 renegotiations of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. The speakers will share lessons for readiness in the context of international trade policy and the incoming administration.
The hybrid panel event will run from 3:00-4:15PM at KEI’s office and be livestreamed on KEI’s YouTube channel.
