KEI's Troy Stangarone comments on the corrosion of rules-based trade system

Reflecting on the ongoing trade conflict between Japan and South Korea, KEI Senior Director Troy Stangarone noted that conflict was bound to affect actors and markets far beyond Northeast Asia. He places a spotlight on how there is a new tendency by governments to "stretch the definition of national security" to apply economic pressure and gain leverage. In addition to Japan's sanctions against South Korea, he highlights China's use of informal sanctions and the U.S. government's use of Section 232 as examples of other datapoints in this trend.
