KEI President Kathleen Stephens Speaks with Scott Snyder on Moon-Trump Summit

April 10, 2019

Former U.S. Ambassador to Korea Kathleen Stephens and director of the program on U.S.-Korea policy at the Council on Foreign Relations Scott Snyder sat down with Voice of America to discuss the upcoming summit between Presidents Moon Jae-in and Donald Trump on April 11.

Both panelists underscored the importance of this summit for President Moon who has taken on the role of delicately shaping the engagement between the United States and North Korea. Following the disappointing outcome of the Hanoi summit, Ambassador Stephens raised worry that the talks may have failed as a result of either North Korea expressing little interest in normalization or U.S. lack of preparedness.

Overcoming this real or perceived gap appears to be one of President Moon Jae-in's key objectives in his meeting with President Trump. Here, Ambassador Stephens credits President Moon for investing in the relationship with the United States.
