A Close Look at the Obama-Lee State Visit

October 13, 2011

Outlook on the Obama-Lee State Visit

September 13, 2011 – KEI hosted a discussion led by Ambassador Jack Pritchard, Korea Economic Institute, which featured Ambassador Thomas Hubbard, The Korea Society, and Dr. Victor Cha, Center for Strategic and International Studies. Their discussion focused on the purpose and possible results of the Obama-Lee State Visit.

On October 13, 2011, President Barack Obama welcomed President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea to the White House for an official State Visit. President Lee is the fifth head of state to make a State Visit under the Obama Administration.

The State Visit by President Lee is rightly expected to be a celebration of the closeness of the U.S.-Korea Alliance. Since the KORUS FTA has been ratified by the U.S. Congress in time for the visit, the focus will be on next steps for the economic partnership. Other topics of conversation between the two presidents will be on less visible issues such as missile defense, the nuclear cooperation agreement, Global Korea, and next steps regarding North Korea.
