Prospects for U.S. Economic Engagement with Asia

The 21st century has often been referred to as the Asian century. Whether that comes to pass or not, the second half of the 20th century saw significant economic growth and wealth creation in Asia, raising it to a prominent position for the United States’ economic future. As these economic changes continue to take shape, what are the opportunities for the United States in Asia, and what are the challenges it will face? How can the United States engage Asia economically, particularly given that the United States will host APEC in 2011?
