He examined South Korea’s current and future economic status, especially in light of the global economic slowdown, domestic structural challenges (e.g., labor issues, aging demographics) and the heightened security uncertainty on the peninsula. Dr. Lim will also discuss the prospects for President Park’s electoral promises to address social welfare issues, seek new growth engines and continue Korea’s global economic leadership.
Finally, with the growing concerns about North Korea’s own future, he shared his views on the implications of the current round of provocations and the country’s own outlook. Scott Snyder, Senior Fellow for Korea Studies and Director of the Program on U.S.-Korea Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations, responded to Dr. Lim’s presentation as a discussant.
