KEI Senior Director Troy Stangarone on North Korea's Looming Demographic Crisis

KEI Senior Director and Fellow Troy Stangarone was quoted in an article about North Korea's declining population published on Mercator Net. The article notes that while North Korea enjoys higher population growth than its southern counterpart, it too is facing a demographic shift. Stangarone adds, “there is little indication that one could expect birth rates in the North to increase significantly once unification or economic integration occurred.”
As a factor that will impact North Korea's economic potential if and when it normalizes relations with the world, this is a phenomenon that should be more closely examined.
