KEI on the development of online market in North Korea

Speaking with Radio Free Asia, KEI Senior Director Troy Stangarone responded to questions on the e-commerce training for North Koreans by the NGO Chosun Exchange. He underscored that the appearance of e-commerce industry is a natural outcome of the expanding consumer market inside North Korea – most prominently noticeable in the "online shopping mall" set up by the state-owned Pyongyang Number 1 Shopping Mall. However, Stangarone also caveated that further expansion of e-commerce will be challenged by the limited access that North Korean citizens have to the internet and the network's complete isolation from the world wide web.
