The U.S.-ROK alliance is entering a new era of cooperation and partnership 70 years after its birth in the Mutual Defense Treaty of 1953. Moving from a primarily military alliance to a broader economic partnership bolstered by the KORUS FTA, the United States and the Republic of Korea share a long history of cooperation based on mutual trust and shared values. Fully committed to upgrading the bilateral alliance to a global comprehensive strategic alliance, the two countries are ready to meet the shared challenges including supply chain resilience, climate change, cyber security, the denuclearization of North Korea, promoting the rules-based international order, and democracy in crisis.
