Korea Club | North Korean Human Rights in the Midst of Political Uncertainty

You are invited to attend a meeting of the Korea Club on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. The event will feature Ambassador Lee Jung-hoon who will give a presentation entitled, “North Korean Human Rights in the Midst of Political Uncertainty.”

Dr. Lee Jung-Hoon was the South Korean government’s inaugural Ambassador for North Korean Human Rights.  Prior to this appointment, he served for three years as Ambassador for Human Rights. As a professor of international relations at Yonsei University, Ambassador Lee founded the Yonsei Center for Human Liberty, which has played an active role in raising awareness of North Korean human rights violations. The Center currently serves as the headquarter for the Sages Group on North Korean Human Rights. Over the years, Ambassador Lee has advised South Korea’s National Unification Advisory Council, Ministry of Unification, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NSC at the Blue House, National Assembly, and many other government agencies and civic organizations. At the Ministry of Unification, he chaired the Advisory Committee for Humanitarian Affairs.

Other main commitments include his role as Chairman of SaveNK, an NGO that helps the defector community, Senior Advisor to the Future Korea Weekly, a current affairs magazine based on Christian and liberal-democratic values, and Vice-Chair of the Supporters’ Group for the ‘House of Sharing’ where several remaining “comfort women” are housed. He has also recently joined the Board of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea as its first international member. His contributions of over a hundred op-ed articles have been compiled into a book published in 2017 – Tongbukah Kyŏkrang ui Hanbokpanesŏ [In the Midst of a Northeast Asian Current]. He received his BA from Tufts University, MALD from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, and D.Phil. from the University of Oxford (St. Antony’s College).

The dinner will start at 7:00 pm, followed by the speaker’s presentation and Q & A session. The program will conclude at 9:00 pm. The cost of the dinner is $25.00, payable at the door by check, cash or credit card.
