Key Points

Here are some takeaways from the event:

  • The pandemic severely restricted the modes of accessible information from North Korea, which has made satellite increasingly important for overcoming these inherent limitations.
  • Satellite imagery provides substantial access to North Korean internal developments and enables observers to check statements made by Pyongyang and other governments interacting with North Korea against satellite imagery of facts on the ground to a certain extent.
  • Despite the immense utility of satellite imagery, there are significant limitations to drawing definitive conclusions solely from this imagery, such as cloudy weather, incomplete information, and confirmation bias

Event Description

In recent years, satellite imagery has become a key tool for understanding North Korea.  With commercial satellite imagery increasingly available at affordable prices, it has helped private sector analysts detect activities in North Korea in regards to its nuclear and missile programs, open-air markets, and prison camps. How can we assess satellite images and what can they tell us about the current situation in North Korea?

For a better understanding of the uses and limits of studying satellite imagery of North Korea, please join KEI for a discussion with NK News Senior Analytic Correspondent Colin Zwirko.

This event will be a hybrid with a limited in-person audience.
