Event Description

On Thursday, October 30, Professor Kim Hyun-Sik of George Mason University will speak OFF-THE-RECORD on the future of North Korea after Kim Jong-Il.

Professor Kim Hyun-Sik has recently published an article entitled “The Secret History of Kim Jong-Il” in the Foreign Policy Magazine, based on a book printed in South Korea in 2007, "A 21st Century Ideological Nomad," detailing his experience as Kim Jong-Il’s private tutor. This powerful new memoir has gained a lot of attention in the U.S. and international press, as it sheds new light on the personality traits of North Korea’s reclusive leader.

Professor Kim has taught in the United States, South Korea, Russia, and North Korea, at academic institutions including Yale University, the Graduate School of North Korean Studies at Kyungnam University in South Korea, Moscow National University, and Pyongyang University of Education. He has authored numerous Russian language education manuals and Korean language textbooks for English and Russian speakers, and has published a dictionary and several books addressing linguistic differences between South and North Korea.

The evening program will be held at Hunan Number One Restaurant—see address above. (Orange Line stop at Clarendon: the restaurant is two and a half blocks northeast of the metro station). Free parking is available, after 6:30 pm, on Highland Street in the lot adjacent to the restaurant (across the street from the church).

The program will start at 6:30 pm with a cash bar. A buffet dinner will be served at 7:00 pm, followed by the speaker’s presentation and Q & A session. The program will conclude at 9:00 pm. The cost of the dinner is $20.00, payable at the door by either check or cash. RSVP is required for this program.
