Trump's America First Policy in Global and Historical Perspectives: Implications for U.S.–East Asian Trade

February 15, 2019

In the Winter 2019 Issue (Volume 43, Number 1) of the Asian Perspective published by Johns Hopkins University Press, KEI Senior Director Troy Stangarone and Adjunct Professor of Global Affairs at George Mason University Korea June Park co-authored a piece titled, "Trump's America First Policy in Global and Historical Perspectives: Implications for U.S.–East Asian Trade."

The article presents a historical context for the global economic system that the Donald Trump presidency has broken. In particular, the article tracks the origins of the safeguards that the Trump administration is now employing to advance its "America First" economic agenda.

The authors further explore the implications of an abrogation of US global economic leadership for the international trading system and US influence more broadly. In particular, the paper considers the implications for East Asia and the global economy as a whole as China, the European Union, and Japan take on larger leadership roles within the global trading system.
