The Truth About KORUS and Jobs

October 6, 2018

In an op-ed for the Diplomat Magazine, KEI Executive Director Phil Eskeland responds to President Trump's allegations that KORUS has cost jobs for American workers. Eskeland examines the figures cited by President Trump – that 250,000 American jobs have gone to Korea – and finds no data to verify this claim. In fact, he finds that trade with Korea, in less than a decade, has created over 110,000 new jobs in the United States, supporting both increased exports to Korea and also jobs created by growing investments from Korean firms. This figure exceeds the estimates originally advanced by the Obama administration. The deal, Eskeland concludes, was a boon for American workers – something that President Trump continues to deny despite the facts on the ground.
