KEI's Troy Stangarone on U.S.-ROK Economic Tensions

KEI's Senior Director Troy Stangarone authored a piece with the International Journal of Korean Studies (Volume XXII, Number 1) on the challenges confronting the U.S.-ROK economic relations under the Trump administration. Stangarone observes that President Trump has prioritized outcomes in trade negotiations – a contrast from previous U.S. presidents who placed a priority on negotiating fair rules.
Stangarone sees the renegotiation of the KORUS free trade agreement as an example of this trend – and asserts that the Trump administration’s continued use of national security to erect trade barriers and the emergence of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles could result in growing tensions in the relationship.
