IOC gets it wrong on North Korea

On September 16, KEI Senior Director Troy Stagnarone published an editorial with The Korea Times questioning the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision to suspend North Korea from competing in the Olympics until the end of 2022. The IOC’s decision followed Pyongyang’s decision not to send athletes to the 2020 Tokyo Games due to concerns surrounding COVID-19. Troy examines historical precedents and argues that the IOC should not have suspended North Korea for their valid pandemic-related concerns.
