On December 17, 2013 KEI hosted a panel of speakers to discuss the prospects for the year ahead, the threats posed by North Korea, potential options for encouraging Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons, and China’s role in resolving the North Korean nuclear crisis. With the December 2013 execution of Kim Jong Un’s uncle, Jang Song Thaek, much of the discussion focused on North Korea as well as its relationships with: China, United States and South Korea.

KEI and Columbia University will host a panel with Stephanie Kleine-Ahlbrandt of USIP and Troy Stangarone of KEI.

Stephanie Kleine-Ahlbrandt will be talking about Xi Jinping’s first year as the leader of China, and how the Chinese leadership is handling events and issues on the Korean peninsula.

Troy Stangarone, KEI’s Senior Director for Congressional Affairs and Trade, will be speaking about the new Park Geun-hye administration’s first year and their approach to China and its impact on inter-Korean policy and South Korea’s foreign policy.
