Siegfried Hecker

Distinguished Professor of Practice
James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies

Dr. Siegfried (Sig) Hecker, former Director of Los Alamos National Laboratory and one of the most honored US nuclear scientists, joined the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies as a Distinguished Professor of Practice in September 2022.

Dr. Hecker previously served as Co-Director of Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation. He is the recipient of many honors and awards, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science Award for Science Diplomacy, the University of California’s President’s Medal, and the Enrico Fermi Award from the President of the United States and the U.S. Department of Energy. Among his professional distinctions, he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. His many publications include the two-volume tome: Doomed to cooperate: How American and Russian scientists joined forces to avert some of the greatest post-Cold War nuclear dangers.
