Research Fellow
Korea Institute of International Economic Policy

Kyong Hyun Koo is the head of international trade and policy team at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP). He earned his B.A. and M.A. from Seoul National University in South Korea and his Ph.D. from the Department of Economics at the Michigan State University in the United States.

His primary research interests include international trade, labor economics, and small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) internationalization policies. In recent research projects, he has explored how trade shocks from China and Vietnam affected industrial/occupational employment structures and workers' lives in Korea (Koo and Kim, 2020, “The Effects of the Increase in Korea’s Trade with China and Vietnam on Korean Labor Market and Policy Implications”) and how Korea's FTA policies affected domestic SMEs' employment and innovation (Koo et al., 2021, “The Effects of Free Trade Agreements on SMEs’ Employment and Innovation”). He has also investigated the effects of FTAs on Korean SMEs' direct and indirect exports (Koo et al., 2019, “A Study on Policy Directions for the Internationalization of SMEs to Encourage Inclusive Trade”), as well as the effects of assistance policies for SMEs' cross-border e-commerce activity (Koo et al., 2021, “The Impact of Digital Platforms on the Internationalization of SMEs and Policy Implications”).
