James Bowen

Policy Fellow

James Bowen is a Policy Fellow at the Perth USAsia Centre, a foreign policy think tank based at the University of Western Australia. He has published influential reports and analysis related to energy, critical minerals, climate change, and related resources and geoeconomic issues in Australia and the Indo-Pacific. James was previously a Perth USAsia Centre Non-Resident Fellow and a Visiting Academic Research Fellow at the Mercator Institute for China Studies in Berlin. Prior to this, he was Editor and Head of the Global Observatory at the International Peace Institute in New York City, where he provided additional support to programs on climate change and countering violent extremism. James has also been a Visiting Fellow at the Australian War College. He has published with numerous external institutions, including the German Marshall Fund for the United States, Australian Strategic Policy Institute, Asia Society Policy Institute, Konrad Adenauer-Stiftung, and National Bureau of Asia Research. James has appeared before parliamentary inquiries and briefed high-level institutions and officials, including ambassadors and federal parliamentarians and departments. He has participated in countless in-person and virtual policy dialogues in Australia, the US, Germany, Japan, Korea, India, and elsewhere. He is a regular contributor to national and international media. Prior to his foreign policy career, James was a political speechwriter and journalist, primarily focused on energy and resources. He has a Masters in International Relations from Griffith University
