On Korea: Academic Paper Series 2015About On Korea: Academic Paper Series
In December 2006, KEI initiated our Academic Paper Series in which we commission up to 10 papers per year with diverse perspectives on original subjects of current interest to Korea watchers. This year-long program provides both leading Korea scholars and new voices from around the world to speak and write on trends and events affecting the Korean peninsula.
KEI is proud to release newest work in its Academic Paper Series, Does the Korean Economy Depend Too Much on Samsung? by Dr. Hyoung Tae Kim.
In his most recent work, Dr. Kim analyzes whether reliance on Samsung Electronics constrains growth and constitutes significant systemic risk to the South Korean economy through the introduction of a Systemically Important Corporation (SICO) framework, mirroring the Financial Stability Board’s Systemically Important Financial Institution (SIFI) classification for financial institutions. He also presents an innovative approach to identifying why Samsung’s main lines of business have been successful in South Korea and provides recommendations to diversify away from Samsung to industries with similar characteristics in order to foster greater growth of the South Korean economy.
