KEI Hosts "AUTOS and the KORUS FTA"February 28, 2008
With the conclusion of the KORUS FTA, the provisions related to trade in automobiles have been perhaps the most contentious aspect of the agreement. In an effort to help educate the policy community on this issue, KEI conducted a half day seminar on February 28 that examined the current state of the automobile industry and market in Korea and the United States and the potential impact of the KORUS FTA.
Bernard Swiecki of the Center for Automotive Research provided an overview of the current state of the automotive industry and market for automobiles in the United States, while Daniel Malone of Butzel Long provided an overview of the current situation in Korea.
Sang-yirl Nam of the Korea Information Society Development Institute presented his finding s on the potential economic impact of the KORUS FTA on the trade in automobiles between the United States and Korea. Dr. Nam’s research was commissioned by KEI as part of its Academic Paper Series.
Douglas Meyer of the UAW and Jeffrey Schott of the Peterson Institute for International Economics provided a comments on Dr. Nam’s findings and broader issues related to the KORUS FTA. To view the written presentations or a video of the seminar, please click on the links below.
